Picture of the 12 inch Kutter telescope of the master himself. In the original observatory in Biberach an der Riss. (Germany)
Last time the telescope was used : 1978.... In that year Anton (Tony) Kutter got Alzheimer. The last years of his life he was completely apathetic. He died in 1985 .
The primary mirror is now in our possession to recoating.

Jean-Pierre,

Happy to see they're still so much concerned with their father's legacy!

Following this visit, I am planning a big event (with the help of Philipdo, Jan van Gastel and others) in April 2018
present a first idea about this event

I think about organizing an ‘>International Anton Kutter and ATM meeting’ Anton Kutter was not only a film maker and astronomer, but he was also one of the founding fathers of self built instruments for amateur astronomers.
The meeting will not only be about Kutter telescopes, but also about contemporary instruments built by amateurs. I aim at a three days meeting in April 2018. Headlines of a preliminary program could be:

• Hotel facilities for the international vistors
• Guided tour, including cinema complex and original Anton Kutter observatory, his birthplace and maybe his grave.
• Presentations in Biberach’s ‘Stadhälle’, with expositions (Anton Kutter’s observing instruments, tools from his workplace, original Kutter telescopes) combined with contemporary ATM instruments from various countries.
• Presentations about Anton Kutters life.
• Presentations by and for amateur telescope makers, about Kutter telescopes and other, contemporary types of telescopes used by amateurs.
• A possibility to visit the Laupheim Observatory, with its beautifull planetarium.
• A possibility to visit ESO Garching with its (by then) completed visitor centre.

We will also contact amateur astronomy organizations in Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain and the United States and ask them to participate. I will not organize this event all by myself, but in coorperation with Jan van Gastel (The Netherlands), well known amateur telescope maker and amateur astronomer. And also Forummember Philp Doutreligne (Philipdo) other people will be invited to contribute.
If we succeed and if amateurs are interested, this will be one of the top ATM-Astronomy events we have had in Europe for a long time.
Hopefully there is interest from the USA.

Kindest regards,

Jean-Pierre

Supported by a group of dedicated ATM’s mainly in Belgium and Holland, I am in the process of planning and organizing an international Kutter Schiefspiegler and ATM weekend in Biberach an der Riss - Germany, birthplace and hometown of the late Anton Kutter. The event is to take place in the spring of 2018. So far it has brought me in contact with some extraordinary people, not in the least the Kutter family. As an appetizer for the 2018 event, I gladly share my contacts and experience with Anton Kutter’s children in a series of 3 articles. The first two articles below. (pdf documents)

ATM group Ghent University Belgium

Interesting account Jean-Pierre. Reads like a novel. You're now officially Anton Kutter's biographer

Hallo together
I am concerned since more than tewnty years with "Schiefspiegler" and a member of the Sternwarte Überlingen at the lake of constance. In the summer 2015 I heared that the Schiefspieger of the Sternwarte Laupheim is no longer used an dismanteld. So I asked the colleagues of Laupheim for this teleskope to get it and now my brother and I are rebuild this instrument. Its an 12 inche Kutter and the optics was from Anton Kutter himself, so its a little bit an honor to do that.
The colleagues form Laupheim told me that you are trying to organice a meeting next year so I am looking happy forward.

With kind regards

Mathias

Mathias,

I've seen some pictures of this instrument. And I never imagined it was a 12", I thought it was an 8 inch. Very nice scope with the saddle between primary and secondary tube serving as declination axis I believe. Very nice Schiefspiegler indeed. I wish you all the luck in the restoration and preservation of this historic telescope. Jean Pierre is leaving in a few weeks for a second visit to the Kutter family to further prepare next years event!

Beste regards,

Philip

and the optics was from Anton Kutter himself,...

Hello Mathias,

Anton Kutter has never maid any optics. His mirrors were made by Tremel in Munchen. That i know for sure. I asked it Adrian, Claus and Flori Kutter. Also the telescope in his own observatory (we disambled this one earlier this week): optic from Tremel.
His telescopen is a 300/7500mm en the telescope that you have is a 300/6000 mm
The event in Biberach; 15, 16 en 17/6 2018
Program will follow soon.
I hope yoy can tell somehing of the restauration of the 'Laupheim' telescope on this event?

In what language, or languages, will the discussions and documentation be presented in?

We Americans are typically woefully monolingual.
