Why the heck not, I'll build a truss dob.
« on: December 30, 2017, 10:00:03 PM »
About a year and a half ago I tried my hand at a wing-it style 10" truss dob, that certainly works, but is wrought with endless design flaws. Live and learn. So I've had a hankering to try it again with the old 12" f5 GSO mirror that's been laying around unused. I have no idea what the quality of the figure on that mirror is, and since the coatings are over ten years old I'll probably have it tested and reworked in the future. For now I can still build around it, and use it.

For this build I'm attempting nothing ground breaking. I simply want a scope that disassembles into a portable box, provides quality views, and let's me play with some of the furniture building skills I have grown into over the past couple years. Comments are welcome, of course.

Materials used will primarily be 12mm Baltic birch, solid sapele (as a stable grained wood with dark contrast for aesthetic), and aluminum.

Router shaping the inner circles of the UTA rings and the mirror box shelf that sits above the primary (not sure if this part has a name...).Attached Thumbnails

Wow! That is just awesome! Thank you for sharing that with us. I love your pictures. I love your woodworking skills, too. I think it is going to be a great scope. I will follow your thread for the completion of the scope. Keep posting your progress. Thank you.

Some nice woodworking tools you got there, I'm jealous. Also of your skilz. Keep us in the loop, looks like a great start to a nice 12" dob!

Thanks for the kind words, William! I'm such a design-on-the-fly kind of builder/maker that when you say you look forward to following the thread, it occurs to me that I also look forward to it since I have no idea where all of these ideas will land. They're like butterflies in this rusty cranial cage. LOL

Mike, much appreciated. I'm lucky to have a wife who supports this hobby, I mean wood working. And I mean literally supports it. Most of the nicer tools, including the Grizz table saw were products of her work bonuses. Of course with all those toys there is some expectation to reciprocate, but I enjoy that part too.

The latest IOU...

Although working 12 hour graveyard shifts prevents any available time in the shop, I did manage to order the remainder of the aluminum I will need from Onlinemetals. I'm planning a super light weight UTA with a 1.25" focuser, so I grabbed 12mm tubes for the trusses. With 1.5mm (1/16") walls, the eight 60" trusses weigh in at under 3.5 lbs. Once cut to length I'm estimating just about 3 lbs total.

Nice work. Have to say, I build the way you do. A few drawings and dive in.. No CAD or months of planning.

Best regards!
