$350 to spend on new telescope, need recommendations
« on: December 27, 2017, 02:45:44 PM »
So I have $350 to spend on a new telescope. Not a penny more. I am getting back into the hobby after 5 year hiatus and starting fresh. I want to go the Dobsonian route for sure, for the aperture I would get for the price, and am willing to buy new or used.

Anyone have any recommendations on what telescope I should look for? Like I said, willing to buy used if it comes to that.

For $350, a Dob, really, is about the best you're going to do. Obviously, you don't want department store junk.

Search our classifieds to see what's available used, there's bound to be someone selling something.

For new, the best deal I think is the SkyWatcher 6". Comes with two eyepieces and a 2" focuser.

I kind of watch the local craig's list for telescopes, and you can find lightly used 8 inch dobs for around that price with a couple of eypieces and a barlow. They dobs are very simple mechanically so a thorough inspection should be good enough to make a good purchase. I would check how well the scope moves with the mount, and look for any damage or signs of abuse. I have an Orion XT-8 that has been working great.

I sold my 12" dob with 3 pieces and collimation laser 2 years ago for $400. So I would think $350 should get you a 10" for sure.

...not a penny more. How about $5 more?

The 6 inch version is within the stated budget, but the 8" is worth the extra $50, for sure. Still, a 6 inch dob is a capable scope.

I had an Orion XT10 for many years and it was great. The XT8 new is $30 out of your price range but if its hits a sale you should be good (it currently has free shipping if that is factored in your budget).

New, it's a 5-inch tabletop or 6-inch dob. Both are pretty capable scopes, to be sure. You can certainly get a used 8-inch dob (and maybe more) in your budget.

If you're "getting back in" but "starting fresh", do you still have things like a red flashlight, a pocket sky atlas, and/or other basic observing aids? If not, does the $350 take that into account?

Craigslist if you're near a metro area.
Otherwise, all of the 8" dobs are very similar. Focusers and finderscopes vary though. If at all possible try to spend $300 for the scope and drop $40 on a telrad. You won't regret it.

Are you going to do strictly "visual" astronomy, or perhaps do some astrophotography someday? This may make a difference in the type of mount you get....

If $350. is all he wants to invest he'd better give up on AP and start sketching. Pencil and copy paper

Used Dobsonianas from craigslist or other local ads ,possibly ebay.....

Put a Wanted ad in the classifieds section for an 8" Dobsonian and list your budget as $350.00.

Do the same in the Swap & Shop section.

You might be surprised and what bites you get!
