Can a 14-year-old carry a 6 or 8-inch dobsonian?
« on: December 24, 2017, 05:43:40 AM »
Following the discussion:
https://www.cloudyni...on-skyquest-45/

1 individual told me to get a larger telescope than two of the scopes I listed in that thread, especially an 8-inch dobsonian.
I found out the individual was a year younger than me, yet he can carry an 8-inch scope.

The reason I'm asking this is because I'm generally not that strong.  That is why one of my main concerns when purchasing a telescope would be whether I could transmit it.  (One thing I know though, is I will carry my cpu tower with parts.)

Thus, can a 14 year old carry a 8 if not, 6-inch dob?

Unless you are handicapped in some way, the answer is yes, you can. You don't have to be that strong. You MAY need to make two trips, but neither piece weighs in at more than 20 pounds. It should be an easy lift.

Phew, at least that removes something from my infinite list of worries.

Thanks for calming me down! (Also, thanks for the help in my last thread)

Not a problem.

Yes, an 8" Dobsonian can be broken down into two, ~20-lb. pieces -- consider this Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Telescope's specifications pagehttp://www.telescope...pe/p/102005.uts :

Weight, optical tube: 20.3 lbs.
Weight, mount/tripod: 20.7 lbs.
Weight, fully assembled: 41.0 lbs.

I'm 14, and while I don't own an 8" Dob myself I've borrowed one and moved it on my own with no problems.

Dobs are generally more clumsy than heavy until you get above 12". The tube of my 12" is slightly over 1.5m long and weighs, maybe, 24kg with the finder. If you can pick up your friends or siblings, even a 12" would be little problem except for the length; it won't duck going through doors.

When it comes to dobs, the weight isn't as troublesome as the volume. When I was a couple years younger than you are, I had some trouble carrying the OTA of my 6" dob from my bedroom to the front yard, only because it barely fit between my little arms.

And then, one night, tragedy struck: I smashed it into the door frame, and my primary mirror cracked. From then on, everything I saw through my telescope had a ghostly double image. It would be about 10 years before I could afford another telescope.

So: yes you'll be able to handle an 8" dob (and you'll only get bigger and stronger, remember), but be careful!

In addition to what others have shared, consider how far you plan on carrying it. A trip of 10 meters is far easier than 100, or up and down stairs.

How do you plan on removing the xbox controller from his/her hands first?

The 8" f6 dobs so common are truly a scope for the masses, young or old.I am now physically challenged and merely a shadow of what I once was. However I have an Orion 8" dob that is still relatively easy even for me to move and set up.The base has a handle making it very easy to move and place with one hand. The tube though sorta long (not really) is light enough that anyone over 50 lbs and no physical limitations can set it up. Even those of us with challenging limits can very often manage this size.

Again, your in the Philippines , its says Metro in your sig. How light polluted are your skies ? Urban area where your going to have to carry/move the scope to view ? Limited by LP to the brighter stuff, moon/planets, double stars ? ? MAYBE the xt 6 is all you really need , a 6in scope in good seeing reveals a lot on the moon and planets, and theres certain attributes (good qualities )  to a 6in AT f8 . And how much are $$$$ these scopes in the Philippes? Here there relatively in-expensive , and a cheap 2 wheel dolly with a couple of bungee cords can be your "scope moving " friend . KISS

Like I said in the other thread, I have someone in the US to send it to me. (To answer your question, most telescopes in my country are junk-quality. One store sells Celestron products at a very high price.)--------------------------------------
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts!

I decided now to get a Skywatcher 6 inch dob instead of an 8 inch because while I might be able to carry the 8-inch, it is way too big for my size (I'm really small for my age. Late development, perhaps?) I know this because my school has an Orion 10-inch Intelliscope.

Unless the 14 year old is a 98 pound weakling, then yes, of course. Any healthy 14 year old should easily be able to handle 50 pounds or more, depending upon whether they just sit and play video games, or actually live.

While I'm a dedicated dota player, at least I actually exercise and live life.
