One of my friends has the Meade Infinity 102. Its a F/5.9 and decent aperture. For a beginner the wider field of view mighrt be a good thing for star hopping. An F/11 is reallly tight. WOuld be fine for planets but if he wants to look at anything else it might be tougher to locate objects in my opinion. Its also on a simple to use Alt/Az mount with slow motion controls. I'm not sure there's a better value for the money for a 100+mm Refractor on a mount. The red dot finder with the reflex site will be nice to have for a beginner as well. Its similar to a Telrad only smaller
