Has a heavenly body ever elicited foul language from you?
« on: December 26, 2017, 09:06:36 AM »
I was observing solo this weekend from my backyard (dark orange zone), buzzing around the sky via GoTo with my 6" SCT.   I'd spent time with Jupiter and then proceeded to check out a few of the other objects which were visible above the horizon.  Most of the faint galaxies and nebula were difficult to differentiate unless I applied prevented vision... then I came upon M13: The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules.   It was my very first ever observation of said item.

I was impressed with such a level that I wholeheartedly exclaimed "Holy s**t" to myself.   I can only imagine the facts one might get from this cluster via a larger extent or darker skies.

So, can you recall any similar moments on your own, possibly while observing solo or among friends (or strangers)... being impressed with a partuclar perspective by means of a scope which you were involuntarily moved to say something which could make script of a PG-13 film?

Edit: upon consideration, this could have been a better topic for the general observation type, but since it was sort of a "newb" experience for me, I decided to post in the beginners forum I guess.

Let's keep this family friendly. Especially in the Beginners' Forum.

The usual exclamation that I hear is with Saturn: "It looks fake!"

Only once, it was when while observing the Sun with my filtered 5i and my unfiltered 50mm finder started toasting my curly locks.

I only used such remarks for a non-functioning drive mount (and haven't needed them since I got my iOptron).

There have been a couple of instances that evoked a swear word since this, but the first time was due to the first object I ever viewed through a telescope, the Wild Duck Cluster. Certainly flung a few colorful words! This came after two failed nights trying to get my C11/CGEM setup for gotos, so after a couple of disappointments, I was expecting failure then bam! An EP full of stars!

The funniest part to me (thankfully nobody was there to see this) was me doing some kind of happy dance while trying to keep my eye centered on the EP since I didn't want to look away!

Oh sure! It has happened a lot.  For example one day I decided to check the Sun for anything interesting in H-alpha and this GIANT prominence came into view the moment I glanced through the eyepiece on the Quark Chromosphere:
To those who are unfamiliar with the Sun: This prominence is humongous. A more typical one can be seen to the upper right, as a small, hook-like thing. The earth is about the size of the small sunspot visible on the Sun.Clear skies!

The first time I looked through a scope (Celestron CR-150-HD) and saw the polar cap on Mars during 2003. That was a "Holy Moly!" kind of thing.

The first time I saw Saturn in an 8" SCT it appeared to be a ColorForm thrown on a deep black background. Gorgeous, and surreal.

For me, it was the first time I saw Jupiter as a disk (through a 60mm f/12 L.L. Bean refractor with a 20mm Huygens lens) and realized those little "stars" lined up around Jupiter were its moons.

Besides my normal foul language, which I don't consider foul to begin with?

Hmmm...

I'm not really prone to outbursts but there have been a few times various objects have elicited a few words. Thor's Helmet has as well as Mars. The Veil did once.

I've elicited, and/or might as well have, a few choice "colorful metaphors" from others because of my own non-foul comments on:

#1 My opinions on a certain high-end eyepiece brand (those that know me know which one it is).
#2 My complete and utter lack of interest in imaging.
#3 My complete and utter ignorance of this model this, or that model that of whatever gear (usually tied to imaging).

There you go.

yes. Several heavenly bodies have elicited "untoward" exclamations from me, but then I swear like a sailor.

These are some of the sights that caused me to say, shout or scream something...

Mars at late twilight, perfect seeing conditions, near opposition, in a 4" Clark refractor...best view of Mars I've ever had.

M17, the Swan (or Omega) Nebula, first time viewing it in the 17.5". I never expected to see that kind of detail.

The Veil Nebula, first time in the 17.5". I had no idea you could visually see this kind of detail in any scope.

The Horsehead Nebula. Not for the lack of trying, but I had never seen the Horsehead in any scope until thru the 17.5" with a Lumicon H-Beta filter. Could actually see the whole snout and the indentation in the bridge of the nose...this one was a screamer!

M1, the Crab Nebula, first time I saw (with difficulty) the pulsar thru the 17.5".

G76, the first (of 60+) globular clusters I spotted in M31, the Andromeda Galaxy. Awesome experience at the time!

The Apennine Mountains at 439x thru the Onyx 80mm ED refractor in perfect seeing conditions. I looked hard but couldn't see even the tiniest spot in that mountain range that wasn't jagged looking, Hadley Rille was visible too. Never saw this area this well before in any size scope.

B86 dark nebula next to open cluster NGC6520 in Sagittarius, thru John Dobson's 18-inch. Spectacular...a hole in the sky next to a star cluster!!!

Well, those are just a few that quickly came to mind.

I only use that sort of language when things don't go right in my set up and I can't find what I'm looking for, or my imaging gear is acting up.

Then, well, I grew up i a family of, and around a LOT of sailors.

YES. That's all I've got to say.
