Just ordered my first eyepiece (on sale!)
« on: December 24, 2017, 03:16:55 AM »
At least, the first excellent eyepiece which didn't come with my range.  I decided about the Baader Zoom.  Didn't get the barlow bundle because with my light polluted sky and f/10 scope, it did not seem like I would actually use it.

I'm happy I checked for earnings now.  It was $259, and a code for another 5% off.  So $246.  Plus they threw in something referred to as a eyepiece bolt case set.

Really excited about using it.  A 2" diagonal and a very low power wide angle eyepiece is next on the want list.  Thanks to everybody for all for those recommendations.

Uh-oh... allow the EP addiction start!

It was only a couple of years ago I needed to talk myself into getting my first top EP, a used 27 Panoptic.  How I got out there to my present EP collection is beyond me...

Love, that EP gets fantastic reviews.  I'm sure you are going to be happy.

LOL I am hoping that with that eyepiece and a nice wide angle 34 to 40 mm (someday) I will be satisfied for awhile. The 13mm that came with the scope drives me bonkers. I can deal with the 40 mm that I have for now.

I think this is a smart choice. I started by buying random eyepieces to fit different scopes. What a hassle. I now have the Baader zoom, so much more convenient than looking for and swapping eyepieces and saves money in the long run.

Down the rabbit hole you go. I have a Baader zoom and use it a lot. You have a good strategy. The Baader and a good wide angle make a nice combination. But if you think you can really stop there......

Avoiding an extensive collection of eyepieces and constantly swapping them out is exactly why I decided on the zoom. Really excited and happy that I thought to check for sales today.

Alice, are you now using the stock 90° diagonal that came with your scope?

Certainly smart, certainly makes for less changing of EPs, and certainly can save you money. But I actually enjoy rooting though my EP case to use different EPs. I enjoy comparing the difference in views between wide fields and simple designs and what details I see at different focal lengths (obviouly the latter part would be more convenient with a zoom).
Plus, if I were to get a zoom, I would really have a hard time justifying all the EPs I have! And to get rid of some would be like asking me to decide which finger I would cut off!

Once you get the first wide angle ep it's gonna be hard to resist getting more. I got the ES 82° 30mm and thought that would give me all I needed with the Baader zoom and some 1.25" ep's that came with an earlier used scope. Well....
Now I'm working on building an 82° ep set. It's hard to beat wide angle for DSO's. I'm buying used as I can so it's taking a while. The zoom is still used a lot though. It's just about the only ep I use for solar - both white light and H alpha. I also use it when polar aligning and for the moon and planets. Good luck. Maybe you have more self control than me.

Yes, until I get a 2" one. This EP is supposed to work on both.

Yeah, I am debating on the ES 82 degree 30 mm vs the ES 68 degree 40 mm. Your thoughts?

The Baader zoom does work on both. It's all I use with my Coronado and it has a 1.25" diagonal (blocking filter). When you do eventually start shopping for diagonals may I suggest checking out the Baader Clicklock. I have it in 2" and love it. It makes changing ep's quick and easy. More importantly it really locks in ep's securely. I don't have to worry about big heavy ep's falling out.

I have not tried an ES 68° 40mm. I love the ES 82°. I look at as if you are going big, go big! I love the wide angle views of large DSO's. M31, M42 and the Veil are spectacular! If I could afford the ES 100° ep's I would have them. Th 82° fits my budget. Hit some star parties and club observing sessions. I'm sure you can get the chance to try them out and see what you like. FYI, I actually have 40mm and 50mm Meade wide angles, too.

I just got the baader zoom last week. It's a great EP. Very convenient. The only thing that's different about it is the background seems darker than in my other Eyepieces of the same magnification. Stars are just as bright or brighter though so I'm happy with it.
