Just talked to Al Nagler on the Phone!
« on: December 27, 2017, 02:32:17 PM »
I just called Tele Vue to ask a couple technical questions regarding 13mm ethos and Everbrite diagonal. After talking to the "guy" on the phone and all questions answered, he revealed that he was Al! I was surprised! I told him it was an honor to talk to him and I learned a lot from reading his articles. He was very down to the earth and glad he could helped me after almost 70 years of being an "amateur". The whole conversation to me was a shock and I felt touched by his genuine interest in a general customer. Am I a nerd?

I've known Uncle Al for many years. His interest in his customers and amateur astronomy is indeed genuine.

Here's a photo of Al Nagler and his 127mm Tele Vue apochromat at the 2017 Cherry Springs Star Party.

You may not have noticed yet DuDuLook, but this board is littered with nerds! Comes with the territory. So you are in good company.

Whether you've been in this hobby a year or 30 years, I think it's always a thrill to talk to the Head Cheese, whether they be Al Nafler, Scott Losmandy, the late Howie Glatter, or Rob Teeter to name a few.

These are all people who have made an impact and a difference in our hobby and our lives and I always make a point to thank them when I have the pleasure to speak with them.

Back in the mid 90s the same thing happened to me. I called Tele Vue late one evening to discuss eyepieces and after talking to a gent for at least 30 minutes he said, "By the way, my name is Al". I'm still using their EPs many years later.

I spoke with "Al" not long ago myself. He is kind, humble and smart, a real asset to the hobby of astronomy .

Nope, a groupie.

One of the things about this hobby I think is cool is the number of small companies, run by friendly people, there are. Lots of people who are famous, at least within this community, interact regularly on forums and when customers call their companies.

This has happened to me twice. Tell the secretary the reason you are calling and Al comes on the phone. Extremely polite and takes the time to answer my amateur questions. Talk about customer service!

That's cool getting to talk to Al. One of the things I like about Stellarvue is getting to talk to Vic Maris when I've called.

Years ago I was on an astronomy forum on AOL and one of the regulars was Roland Christen of Astro-Physics. What a wealth of knowledge there.

Maybe I should have said many, many years ago, lol. Though I still use my AOL email address (he said sheepishly).

Al, whom I first met through a mutual friend probably back in the late 1960's and been friends with ever since, is not only a font of optical knowledge, but equally adept as a listener to whatever you have to say. He and I, together with a small group of other old-timers, occasionally spend a delightful couple of hours at the annual Stellafane Convention in our screen tent talking over old times and how Tele Vue and its projects have evolved over the years. These days Al is largely retired from the business, having handed it off to one of his children as I recall, but he still goes around promoting the companies wares and occasionally can be found in the office answering phone calls.

I met him and his son at a trade show I was working in Boston in the '90's. Both great guys. Another year at the 2013 NEAF show, S&T had just printed an article of him and I got his signature on the article page and a picture of the two of us.....nice timing.Attached Thumbnails

>>>>>What a nice, brilliant man. He's bigger than any Hollywood celebrity to me!

I agree he is nice and brilliant (and cheery!!!!).....but you must have been talking to him over the phone because he is not really all that big in person. He's just normal size. I think I am even taller than him, and that is not saying much.
