The negative reports on the 5mm Delite are the same two people repeating themselves.
Take the information with a grain of salt.
You should do that with all eyepiece comments, really, including my own.

With all due respect, this is not true. There are quite a few on CN who have provided negative reports on the 5DL, compared to others in the line.

Those who have posted critical comments include yourself with regard to a soft field stop (suggesting disassembling/opening the EP to correct it yourself - which is questionable as far as QC is concerned), myself (I have actually made an effort to not repeat myself), BillP (who reviewed other FL's more favorably),and I count quite a few others. The poster you are responding to said the people were on a different forum, too (and I am on no other astro forum discussing EPs).

In my TV doublets, the 5T6 is incredibly well corrected and the 5DL isn't competitive. Conversely, in my TV doublets the 7DL is exceptional and the 7T6 is sloppy in the outer field. However, the Nikon 7SW equals the 7DL with a larger AFoV and (IMO) better form factor. Am I repeating myself?

Don,

Since I'm apparently being accused of repeating myself, I might as well repeat myself. My argument with the 5DL is not contrast, which is excellent, nor is it about comfort. It is sharp... in the middle. My only criticism is that it is not sharp towards the outer part of the field. This detracts from my lunar and solar observing when I want to view the entire disk in focus. I also have 7,9, and 13 Delites, and all are excellent.

Being a bit surprised with this, and wondering if something else might be the problem, I asked on this forum, if the outer field is not sharp in a flat-field (NP101) scope, is the problem with the eyepiece? You answered YES. :-)

I occasionally use the 5DL for planets and double stars, and it does nicely. But I don't use it to look at the moon or the sun. Something like a NT6 or Pentax XW would be a superior choice at this focal length.

End of repetition. :-)

What BillP review of the 5DL are you talking about? I'm staring at multiple posts he made from summer though winter 2016 in which he stated that he found the 5DL disappointing compared to the 7DL.
