Greetings,

Jack Horkheimer was a guest speaker to our astronomical society a couple times in the late 80s. We always arranged a nice banquet in his honor afterward. After most of the members left, some of us hanger's on were treated to several amusing stories told by Jack. As the group dwindled to just a few, he ordered a nice if not somewhat expensive, Pinot Noir. Then came a second bottle. Needless to say, we were all feeling pretty good by the time we gave the wait staff a break and let them finally go home!

Jack was a collector of everything astronomical and I gave him several different Halley's Comet pins commemorating the 1986 apparition mounted behind a glass frame. Jack and I kept in touch by letter sporadically for the next few years. When his home was burgled and he lost his Halley Comet memorabilia I was able to replace it, much to his surprise and delight.

I eventually lost touch with him and was shocked & dismayed to read about his death. I very much cherish a signed letter he gave me in 1990 on his Museum of Science & Space Transport Planetarium letterhead thanking me for replacing his Halley memorabilia.

Keep Looking Up!
Steve Franks

I enjoyed the spots and I too always "Arc to Arcturus and speed on to Spica".

Hate to spoil the happy memories but in real life the fellow had some problems.

I met Jack, Art Smith and Bill Douglass at the Museum of Science & Space Transport Planetarium back in 1973 and remained friends with them until their end. We used to be entertained with them for many years and all three were jovial and happy campers. The restaurants in the area must have gone broke after the D'Auria's and my family left town; and the Parker's,Smith and Douglass passed away. Many years of fund memories with them all.

I remember that crazy Toupee he wore. It sort of looked like a dead Cat laying on his head.
He was sure funny in a corny sort of way..

I'd already been "looking up" ~ 20yrs before the "Star Hustler" came out. I'd often stumble across his show while packing in ( or out) with my gear back in the 80's. I already well knew the theme song, from my love of listening to the birth of "electronica" in the mid-s 70's. I had a huge Tomita collection.
But I'm surprised nobody's posted this yet https://www.youtube....h?v=0JEMWN8SKJg

Jack was a great teacher and entertainer. I meet him at a function in the Cleveland area back in about 1998. Jack was also a rare coin collector. This was what his lecture was about that evening. I remember he passed around a rare small gold coin with Cleopatra's portrait on it. It was a fun evening, even without any references to astronomy.
