I'm dreaming...
« on: December 29, 2017, 03:42:52 AM »
Of a clear... Christmas....
Tonight is the only clear night for a while and the Moon is 99% full. All of the sunny days in the forecast have cloudy or snowy nights.

(sigh)

Looks like you'll be getting a White Christmas.

Bing Crosby sang it and it's credited with being the most successful single of all time with 50 million copies sold.

Look at it this way,Augustus. It's a weather forecast. Therefore it has a 50% chance of being wrong.

I once went on a tour of a national weather station. Interesting. They had tons of computers with big monitors. Each had a map with dozens of colors showing different conditions - temp, rain, humidity, pressure, wind, traffic...anything you could think of.

The thing was, the colors were so close together I couldn't imagine how they could tell the difference.

When they were done their speal, and said 'that's basically how we forecast the weather,' me being the smart a$$ I am, pointed to a large window and said, "And if all else fails, you just look out the window to see what's happening!"

The tourists liked the little joke and even the staff laughed, but it was an obvious forced laugh!

I was never invited back.

We have a weatherman named Dick Goddard in Cleveland, kind of a local TV legend, actually just retired. I recall years ago he said in an interview that he provided a 5-day forecast because viewers demanded a 5-day forecast. He said it is very accurate a couple days out, getting less accurate three days out, and he admitted that by day five it is not much more than a guess.

That was probably a couple decades ago so maybe forecasting is more accurate today, but I still very much doubt the forecast that is depressing the OP has any meaningful accuracy more than a few days out.

Our lot seems to have got their supercomputer up and running, and the forecasts are (in a way) worse.
They now will predict that our area will be (say) slightly cloudy in 48 hours time.
Then the next run 12 hours later may have newer data and so changes from slightly cloudy to mainly clear.
Then 12 hours later the next run with newer data again could then predict not clear and mainly cloud.

In effect the forecast alters, or can alter, at 12 hour intervals because it chews up data and comes up with an updated forecast. Which may or may not be the same as any of the previous.

One day even the person presenting said/warned that it could change again by the next forecast.

Might be time for me to make a career change to meteorology. If I had a job where I could be wrong half the time and still keep said job... I could spend a lot more time here on CN

Very torn here. I'd love to have clear skies for astronomy, but I also have a lifelong love of skiing. The only bad weather outcome for me is cloudy, with no snow-cover.

Dick Goddard is a legend here in Clevo. Are you old enough to recall "Upbeat"? (*I am... but just barely, It was on when I was idk 7 or 8 years old)

Not ringing a bell. I was born in 1969, so maybe before my time? I do recall one minor dust-up involving Goddard, and not his fault at all -- the station started running billboards with the promotion "Believe in Goddard" which got some of the local religious groups riled up. For those not from the area, Goddard is also well known for his work with animal rescue groups, and for years he would have dogs from the local Animal Protective League (APL) on his show promoting their adoption. He also started the local woollybear festival -- woollybears would be those black and brown striped caterpillars that show up in the fall, whose coloring is supposed to predict weather for the upcoming winter. Probably about as accurate as the original poster's forecast :-)

Ah. yes. that explains it. I was born in '59. Upbeat was on in the mid late 60s as I recall...

Sorry for the digression Augustus...

I'm also torn between winter fun and imaging, which has grown exceedingly difficult since my older brother put up some floods in his backyard (formerly my dad's) that seem to stay on all night most evenings, so I can't do much outside around here anyway until I clear a couple trees from my own back yard next year and put in some sort of pad for setup. At this point I'm hoping for snow so I can get back into cross country skiing.

Apparently it's now supposed to be clear on the night of the 25th. Can't wait to try out my new goodies.
