Or lock this thread and start a new one about the website being hacked?

I wonder if it is time to change the title of this thread to, "Canadian Telescopes survives after website hacked by criminals"....

After all, the Facebook post by the business owner was the first actual 'fact' in the entire thread....

Dave

Actuallythefirstpostwasquitefactual. Thefacebookpagewaswipedcleanandpeoplewhohad ordered items and been billed were notgettinganyresponsefromCANADIAN TELESCOPES.

Jon
Good point. I overstretched my post a bit there.... I wonder if the billed and ignored folks are hearing from them now that the problem has been addressed. It would be excellent if anyone with these experiences would post them here..  Keeping the thread open is a must. Still wondering about the misleading title....

It is a really unfortunate thing because the company will take a pretty big loss making things right for customers. Andit will taketime for customers to even learn what has happened. On top of that there is theshortterm and potentiallylong term loss of business as a result.

It is unlikely anyone will ever be caught and held responsible for the hack and theft. If those responsible were to be tracked down I suggest the appropriate punishment would be to allow one of their victims tobeat themdaily with aBird-Jones OTA, then force the guilty partyto attempt to collimate andview a credit card image placed half a mile awaythrough theaforementioned OTAeach evening in order to receive their dinner. They would only be allowed to eat if they could read a 16 digit code and expiration date, plus a 3 digit security code--all of which would change from evening to evening. If they were on particularly good behavior they might be allowed to use a plastic 2x Barlow...

Hi,

I am Canadian Telescope's client. My order was placed and paid in August. Never received my order or my money. Finally I had to go through VISA dispute process, and to be honest, I wouldn't do that (I had a very good experience with CT in the past) if there was any sort of a feedback from CT. But after about two weeks of sending emails, calling them (nobody answers the phone), sending FB messages and hearing nothing back .... one can't be too optimistic. And then their FB page disappered ... that was a trigger for me.

Anyway .... To be honest, my main concern is credit cards security. We were told (their FB statement) that it's all good and CC data is safe, but ... can we be 100% confident in that ? After all they are supposed to be astronomy equipment experts, not necessarily IT security professionals. So even if they deeply believe it's all safe and secure...well....they can as well be simply wrong.

Their store was running (most likely) on Magento e-Commerce platform (please someone correct me if I am wrong) and the platform was hacked in many different ways in the past (please google it if you want) and stealing CC numbers was a part of these hacks. I don't know too many details of 2016 hacks (I am not an IT guy myself), but I just can not be confident that it did not involved our CC. So my advice for anyone who was using CC to pay Canadian Telescope - please have a close watch of you CC statements. Or - maybe - we could put some pressure on CT and request them to elaborate little more of our CC safety.

Take care,

Marcin

For the record, nothing I said was unfactual. My experience with the company was positive, and I *am sad they are experiencing problems.

Not that it matters or anything, but not everyone was spewing speculative pap or negative experiences.

So the million dollar question or questionsare, are they in fact still in business, going out of business and are in trouble or was the website hacked? it seems to me that noone knows for sure other than the owner or owners, until these questions are resolved its buyer beware, for me anyway, one thing did trouble me was the fact that one poster drove to the store only to find it seemed to be empty, as for a face book post, don,t believe all you read is a good rule of thumb,TD.

I advise this thread if I hear anything.

I had $450 dollars credited to me from my credit card company for an asi120mm usb 3.0 so I don't get charged interest.

I filed 2 weeks ago, they have 45 days since I filed my request, to communicate with my credit card company on whether or not they are going to ship it. So far, nothing.

Ultimately, I don't really want the camera anymore and I do hope they bounce back from this.

I assume they will have to sort out all of these credits first and find out new, secure location to do business out of. And fix the security flaws with their Web page.

Easier said than done.

My friend suspects his information was stolen and had a fraudulent charge on his card after using the can telescopes Web page - which he had to deal with. I had one too I which I had to cancel my credit card but again no one can say for sure.

Canadian telescopes confirming it themselves makes our two situations highly plausible that It was their Web page hacked that resulted in both our fraud charges. Both cases, the money stolen was under $100 dollars but recovered right away.

Speculative, yes, but regardless it's not Canadian telescopes fault in all of this.

I also had a fraudulent charge on my card shortly after placing my order with Canadian Telescope in September. I had to cancel my card as well. I can't be certain that it is related; but, I had suspected something was up in September as the credit card is not regularly used other than at Amazon.I also know that the items in my order from September were never ordered from the supplier. Canadian Telescope told me that they were ordered; but, the vendor told me otherwise. There is more to this story than the Facebook post is letting on.

I'm waiting for my refund from Canadian Telescopes to process. I still have a VISA dispute that has been placed on hold until the refund is processed. I'm told the refund can take up to 14 days.

At this point, I would say it is buyer beware.

If what the owner has said is true, then this is a very good example of how NOT to handle a business crises such as this. It would seem that the damage control has been so far non-existent.

Customers are normally a pretty reasonable bunch, and a short email of apology goes a very long way to mending relationships. It would appear that their has been little communication and much secrecy.

It is true, I have filed a claim myself with my CC company. Same with a friend of mine.

They were my prime, go-to supplier that helped me since the beginning.

Now I am trying out KW telescope, and possibly All Star telescope in the future.

That is a great store to purchase items from. They stand behind their products.

Just an update. I received my refund from Canadian Telescope today. So, at least they are refunding customers if requested.

I ordered my items directly from the vendor in the US last week and should have them tomorrow. I would prefer to support Canadian retailers; but, no one else was able to order these for me.
