Is it OK to store my SCT permanently outside.
« on: December 24, 2017, 01:18:03 AM »
I adore my C6 but it seems to take forever to cool down.  I don't wish to devote 1K on a 5" APO when my C6 can perform it nicely when chilled.  I typically wake up at 5 AM and there are lots of times where I wish I could take a peak at Saturn or Jupiter before going to for work.

I'm thinking of storing my C6 permanently in something similar to that placed permanently in my deck.  My yard is fenced and my puppy would bark if a person entered into my garden and attempted to open up the storage container.

Would this work?  Idea is to take the Alt-Az bracket, set the range on and start observing.

Control high humidity and insects & it'll be fine.

As long as it is protected from moisture and insects and high temps ( like a car's interior in the summer, high temps can allow the grease to flow and cause issues) there should be no problems.

I had both a c11 and a lx200 12" that lived outside 24/7 down here in the sub tropics of southern florida. The TG 365 protected both perfectly.

Must be protected from moisture and high temps. I'd also make certain that your corrector plate is covered and protected and eyepiece holder covered up. I've had a problem with tiny spiders getting inside my Meade SCT and running small web strands inside the tube.

Absolutely!!!  Get yourself a Telegizmo 365 cover and leave it set up on your deck!  You can hibernate the mount and that way you can uncover, and be observing in under 30 seconds!   Look life is too short to worry about all the details of use. Its not like you are talking about a priceless painting... Its a piece of metal with a mirror. Use it while you can and have fun.
I have kept my scopes outside covered by a Telegizmo for over 3 years now.  I dont worry about all the details, sure I have some rust now developing on some of the tiny screws... yea I have had some chipmunks think they could store seeds on the tray, wasps like to build nests inside my Telrad and spiders are always stringing webs here and there if I dont use it for a few weeks.  So what.  I use it when I can and I dont care about wear and tear!

Well said. I love that thought process.Sometimes I overthink too much. I will try this out and report in few weeks.

Here in the south, we get about 3-4 months of dry weather during the summerand I'll leave the scope and mount set up under a Telegizmo 365 during that time. As others have mentioned, moisture and insects are your primary worry. It dews real hard at times and I came out one evening to get the scope set up and found a pool of water inside the SCT tube from condensation and the inside of the cover was soaked. I've had to knock mud dobber nests off the mount too. If you can find a way to control these, there's no reason you can't leave it out 24/7. Just be sure to check on it every now and then. I noticed a small leak in my cover after checking it after a hard rain. Fortunately, no damage was done and all the electronics were unaffected.

Heya,

My C6 lives on my pier when the moon/planets are out at night under a TG365 cover with an evadry unit to help with humidity. I button it up tight with bungee cords to keep out the bugs and bats that would be up in there all the time.

Very best,

Interesting solutions! If I were using that yard box shown in the first post, I might bundle the scope in a black yard bag to minimize bugs but would that, potentially, create humidity problems? While I keep my scopes in an studio outbuilding, I never turn the heat on unless I'm working in there during the winter. It's warmer than a garage due to its insulation but my acclimation times for the scopes I own and have owned is shortened considerably over a warm house. I'd keep scopes in my garage otherwise.

Mal, I just love your pier!

If you go with that HD storage seat, make sure you at least find a place to keep it out of direct sunlight. That thing will be hotter than you know what otherwise. Also, might want to put some desiccant in there or find a way to ventilate with screen material so things can dry out.

Since Abhat lives in central Maryland, the blowing dust of the dry southwest is an unlikely concern.. But for someone around this area thinking about it, it definitely gets into everything..

It's really necessary to monitor the humidity. I use a remote temp/humidity sensor (Oregon Scientific BAR388HGA and THGR122Nx) under the cover (Telegizmo 365). When either gets too high it needs to be controlled.

Yeah, being from Maryland, we get a good bit of rain and humidity is really high from May to September. That will be the biggest thing you will need to worry about with storing outside.

My telescopes and all accesories live in my unheated garage. The are always at or near ambient temperature. I don't even concern myself with this. As stated above, be sure you control:

Temperature - I would not put it where it will sit in the sun and bake.
Water - Has to be kept dry, not desert dry, No rain on it dry.
Moisture - some kind of ventalation so there is no build up inside.
Better to store it off dirt/grass as this will release moisture into the container
Deck or cement patio should work
