The irony just astounds me, choosing artificial star-like projections that don't even come close to the real thing over THE REAL THING.

This is what I was thinking when I saw it.

Horrifying.

Seems like the lights coming in the windows would be enough to drive anybody crazy...

This is interesting. Last night I was here and clicked on the star shower link to see what it was about. That was all. I cloesd the link and posted here. This morning I had an email from these star shower folks trying to sell me their lights. What's going on here? There's no way they get my email is ft my iPad unless someone gives it to them. That someone must be the folks who run this forum, an that is an OUTRAGE! Until I get an explanation this forum is off limits to me.

Rich

Hi Rich, I'll bet it had to do with your clicking the link. I'll keep an eye out for spam email myself, but so far I haven't received any from that company. I can assure you that neither Cloudy Nights nor its host Astronomics gives our members' personal information out to third parties, especiallynot to third parties like this whose products are detrimental to the enjoyment of our hobby.
Scott, I read your reply last night and I've been mulling it over. I have no reason to be distrustful of you or anyone here at the forum. However, this is either a very strange coincidence or someone is not telling a straight story. My distrust of corporate America and my having seen a lifetime of corporate malfeasance leads me to suspect your superiors are not being honest with you or me. I've never received emails from a site that I merely clicked on once for all of 15-20 seconds. I don't know the answer here, but I'm very leary and disappointed.

I thank you for responding, Scott. Please don't take it personally, but trusting companies in this new age of robber barons is akin to believing in the tooth fairy. I think I'll keep a safe distance.

Rich

I frequently find ads from Orion Telescopes and Binoculars inside web sites unrelated to astronomy. Examples are sites devoted to automobiles and firearms.

Do these use lasers? Are they over 5mw? If so, they're not legal in the US....

I saw the ad for one of those things for the first time in the past week... ugh, it made me sick.

Horribly tacky in appearance in a tasteless way only our hyper-consumer culture could create, AND these ghastly dazzle lights manage to blind your neighbors, pets, kids, friends, and anyone else unfortunate enough to be downrange of the blazing lights!

Gah... normally, I'm not in favor of heavy-handed laws and such, but where does the madness end? At what point are we going to have people just setting up colored floodlights on their front yards to "better show off their house" and "keep crime away?!"

The idiocy of it is mind-boggling. Anything to kill the night sky and look more wasteful with your money and tasteless than your neighbor. Rushing the next extinction is right...

We're there. I've seen discussions in here where guys are dealing with very similar things.

Being a devil's advocate ... looks like these are green/red/etc laser module with a grating of sorts in front of it (you can get laser pointers with removable grating in the front - search for laser star cap). Max output is 5mW, much like GLP that some of us use. Now, compare that output with half a dozen colored flood lamps (incandescent are 75W-100W), it might be a better alternative after all.

Rich, as an ex Moderator for many years here on Cloudy Nights, I can assure you this did not originate with CN. As far as trusting companies; CN is a family-owned business that takes their member's privacy very seriously. It seems you are the only one that had this problem, when clicking that link; so that should tell you, it's something on your end; rather than with this site.

Hope you will continue to take part in the forums here!

If you have a gmail account, and are signed in , Google tracks everywhere you have clicked, and tailors ads that you see, on unrelated sights. Could that be a source?
Horid light idea.

These laser lights have been the craze here in Canada for the past two years at Christmas. Almost all my neighbours have them. Fortunately they dont affect the backyard!

Aw, it kinda fits in with my putting the stereo speakers outdoors and playing the theme from "Star Wars" cranked up to 11 at 3am waitin' for Jupiter to come up (since I'm hard or hearin' and all)

How many lumens does the typical setup produce? It looks like a small number of 5mW lasers and some kind of beam splitter to produce thousands of projected lights on your house and plants. Are they less bright than the old fashioned strings of christmans lights?Gale

Imagine a child ( or anyone) looking out the window in amazement at the pretty light.

It is then discovered that if they put their head at just the right spot.......the pretty light stays really bright in their eye.How long should I let my child stare at the pretty laser light? How do you stop a small child from looking at the pretty light?Gary

I'm seeing the lengthy TV commercial for these idiotic lights quite often, lately. The company must have a big advertising budget. After the initial "Order now, not available in stores" selling period, they'll probably show up, labeled "as seen on TV" in local stores, everywhere.

Almost makes me want to puke...
