Sleeping out in the open is overrated. The CO2 in your breath and your body heat tends to attract all kinds of insects.Clear skies!

Sleeping out in the open is one of life's greatest gifts.

Throughout my twenties as a Forester and got to sleep out in the open on many, many nights. On my days off, I would backpack!! and once again sleep out in the open. It was wonderful. There is nothing like a frosty morning high up in the alpine zone.

It was great to watch the stars when waking in the middle of the night already dark adapted!

As a side note, I remember taking a compass bearing at the end of the day to determine where the sun would rise in the morning. IF I needed to get up early for work I would make sure the sun's rays would hit me ASAP to wake me up. In those days, even travel alarm clocks were way to large to carry in a backpack.

I would love to have a bed outside that could be quickly protected from the elements in case of rain, yet be out in the open.

Anybody have any ideas for a "roll-off roof bed'??
