My 2014 Subaru Forester shuts them off with the hand brake up a notch.  They are also on a dedicated fuse which can be pulled without disabling anything else.

I do notice less folks pulling out in front of me with them on in daytime, compared with my old car that did not have DRLs so they do help with safety I think.


I had a Chevy Tracker aka Suzuki Vitara, and the hand brake trick worked for me too.  Just pull the hand brake lever one click and out go the lights.
