NYT article: people upset over digital billboards

LOS ANGELES ??$" The nighttime sky over Polly Osborne??$???s residence ??$" and also the bedroom she shares with her husband ??$" started to glow several months past, when an electronic billboard went up in an intersection behind her tree-lined street in Westwood.

??$??We started noticing we were having false sunrises,??$?? Ms. Osborne said, describing arcs of light that slipped from magenta to green to white as the billboard??$???s images changed.

True, this report focuses on an element of light pollution entirely apart from its impact on the night sky or astronomy - but in the exact same time, points to a potential beneficial growth of consciousness and diminished public tolerance of intrusive forms of light pollution.   It is precisely the level of public desensitization and passive endorsement of mild pollution (and different kinds of inefficient, intrusive lighting) that makes coping with light pollution such a formidable undertaking.   Even if for reasons having nothing to do for the moment with appreciation of the night sky - the type of negative response this report speaks of isn't only useful, but is in reality an important step forward toward handling the issue.   Only when the majority of individuals start to regard improperly protected smart lights as unacceptable intrusion and socially irresponsible waste will we start to generate any real improvement.

Along precisely the same line.
In this region, a few years back, one "Auto Mall" put up one of those who was so bright that Caltrans had to ask then to flip down it.
Seems it had been temporarily blinding drivers on the freeway.
Thankfully they did and still do.

I always wondered why regular billboards couldn't have their lights at the top, aimed down and in toward the billboard instead of up at the sky.

I remember some older billboards that were lit from poles sticking out from above. I believe that the lights migrated to the ground because of the relative ease in changing the bulbs.

A little different take on the digital/TV style billboards... sure they are light sources, but they aren't bright white lights, aimed upward like the lights illuminating the regular, old fashioned billboards.  Maybe these will actually be <em class="bbc">better from a contribution to the light dome perspective.

I always wondered why regular billboards couldn't have their lights at the top, aimed down and in toward the billboard instead of up at the sky.

I've wondered the same thing about freeway exit signs.
