Berlebach Planet tripod for G11 order experience
« on: December 29, 2017, 12:51:35 PM »
Oct 24th I pulled the trigger on a Berlebach Planet tripod, the smaller one, with a Losmandy G11 mount. Bought it direct from the Berlebach.de website. I was a bit worried because the German govt. charges around 16% VAT (their sort-of sales tax) and it can be a bit daunting to get it back from the government if it's charged. Plus shipping can be tough because of US customs and the shear distance the box has to travel. I was pleased to find that Berlebach subtracts VAT automatically if the shipping address is to the US. On the shipping issue I decided to risk it. So. The mount was 565 euros + 40 euros for double clamps + 110 euros for the G11 mount + 27 euros to replace to spiked feet with rubber tipped feet = 742 euros. Now subtract 118.47 euros in VAT and add 74 euros shipping to the US = 697.53 euros. Charged it to my US VISA which converted to US $xxx at a not too outrageous exchange rate. Wedn Nov 1 I started to get cold feet because I hadn't heard anything so I sent an email to them asking if it had shipped, and if not, when it would ship.

Today bright and early I got a big box on the front porch containing my new tripod - 17 days from order to delivery - not bad IMHO! Especially since their shop in Germany is 5,111 miles from my front porch. Haven't opened the box yet, maybe tomorrow.

I seem to be constructing a very international telescope - my GSO 10" RC is from Taiwan (7,097 m), the Losmandy G11 is from Hollywood, CA (1,083 m), and the Berlebach tripod is from Germany (5,111 m). It's interesting to think that if I sum up the travel distances of the three, it's less than 6% of the distance from here to the moon. Truly trivial astronomical distances.

Congrats on your new tripod it's a nice one and a good match for your G11. However,I think I would have just ordered it from B&H Photo so as not to worry about shipping times, exchange rates, VATs etc...

I would have absolutely no fear buying from the big German outfits (Teleskop Service, APM Telescopes, Berlebach) . These are very responsible companies.

Congratulations on the tripod. It's a very good one. I have two Planet tripods myself. Both with the Losmandy fitting. Rock solid.

Congratulations on the tripod. I also got mine directly fromBerlebach this year and saved some money by avoiding B&H as the middle man.

How do these compare to the Losmandy G11 folding tripod?

Thanks for posting about your experience. I am close to ordering a Report 112 (not available in the US as near as I can tell). This makes me a lot more comfortable about ordering from their website and shipping from Germany.

I had a similar very positive experience ordering my Planet directly from Berlebach. Marion Totterwitz was always very quick to respond to any questions I had about their products.

Both are fine tripods, you wouldn't go wrong with either. If you already have the Losmandy HD folding tripod, keep it!

Forgot two things. First it was shipped from there to here in 10 days, not 17 - I can't count! 10 days is even more astounding considering the distance. Second - I cannot find anywhere on the box where US customs had it. I recall 20-30 years ago there used to be a customs form put on the box but maybe not anymore. Also, while i was writing the first post a second box from Berlebach arrived with the beautiful Ash center tray and the spare "pointy" feet. All in all an excellent experience. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from them again.

I am glad you got it in 10 days. I am eagerly waiting for mine ordered on 10/26, shipped on 10/27 and still shows as sitting in Frankfurt? May be it will speed up on Monday I have been getting stuff from EU, Japan and Australia with no worries over the years.

SInce you ordered the rubber feet, you'll also get the spikes, probably in a separate plastic baggie. Don't throw them away accidentally or loose them! I use them more than the rubber feet since I set up in my back yard in the grass. The spikes are awesome to dig into the ground and the tripod is extremely solid and there are no vibrations. I only use the rubber feet when I set up on a concrete surface.

I have the Losmandy heavy duty folding and a Berlebach and yes both are excellent. The Losmandy is slightly heavier but quite a bit stiffer, actually feels dead (no ring, resonance, or flex). The Berlebach has a tray, is also quite stiff but not in the Losmandy class stiff, and is old school wood pretty. You can not go wrong with either one but the Losmandy is a little over $300 cheaper.

Probably depends where you're from, here in Europe, a Berlebach is a lot cheaper than a Losmandy FHD tripod

In my case, I ordered the FHD tripod along with my Losmandy mount, so I paid more or less the price of a Berlebach would cost me here

Sure is one heck of a sturdy tripod, I can stand on it, with the legs extended!
