Do I need APCC?

(1/3) > >>

Henry Edward:
I just bought a brand-new Mach1-GTO, *without* the handcontrol (I will be only imaging with this mount). It arrives tomorrow... Currently I use SGP for imaging, and I expect that I'll be able to control the Mach1 using ASCOM and SGP (with PhD2 for guiding).

The Mach1 comes with a 30-day offer for a 30% discount on APCC. Normally I'd say "what the heck, I just spent a mini-fortune, what's another $350"--but in looking at the description of the software it mainly offers convenient ways to prevent crashing your mount and ways to software-park, plus interface to some other applications (like Rapas and PEMPro) that I currently don't have and don't plan to acquire.

So should I spend the money? What will it give me that SGP will not? And PEMPro, which I would normally be interested in, appears to require Maxim DL or the discontinued CCDSoft. Not going to be using Maxim or CCDSoft--that's definite.

Incidentally, any opinion on any other software I should be using with this mount would be quite welcome.

Michael Litvack:
Do you have a permanent pier for it? An observatory or at least a telegizmos 365?

I see people usinghttp://eq-mod.source...t/eqaindex.html (forget the EQMod it does not appear to be written for AP mounts)

I don't have APCC

No, I will be mobile for the foreseeable future with no observatory. I don't quite see the relationship between the Telegizmos cover and software... ? EQMod is for Skywatcher mounts I believe.

If it's for automated operation, then I don't really need it. I wonder if "Horizons" is good enough reason to get it--accurately tracking asteroids etc. might come in handy someday. The basic version for $175 sounds like a pretty decent deal as overpriced astro stuff goes...

Grab APCC. I use the Pro vesrsion on my Mach1, AP900 and AP1600. It works really nice with SGP. It's great for integrating various software products together. Virtual serial port capabilities. You should be able to download the manual for the base and the Pro versions. Might help with your decision. Your going to be using a computer if not using the handcontroller and it's got some great features.
Support from AP should you need it is exemplary.

Welcome to the the world of premium mounts.
