EM-11 T2Z + Nexus DSC w/WiFi + SkySafari Pro [iPhone]
« on: December 29, 2017, 12:38:12 AM »
I'm wondering if this combination is doable, as I've had similar connections with my T2 mounts in the past BUT this is a T2 "Z":

EM-11 T2Z + Nexus DSC w/WiFi + SkySafari Pro [iPhone]

This would be a CABLE connection from the Mount to the Nexus DSC and a WIFI connection between the Nexus and iPhone SE w/SkySafari Pro

My first 2 questions are:

Is there anything about the "Z" mount that would make this combination incompatible?

Is there a Serial to RS232 Port [phone jack] cable specifically for being able to use the provided Takahashi Cable to plug into the Nexus?

thanks!

Tim

So I understand, you're trying to use the Nexus DSC in a similar function as a SkyFi unit?

Yes, that's correct. Set up in this fashion would allow me to use the mount with just the Nexus DSC or use Sky Safari on my iPhone via the built in Nexus WiFi. My primary issue is the Takahashi Serial Cable provided with the mount will need an adapter to allow connection to the RS232 Serial Port on the Nexus.

Hello Tim,

It is not possible at the moment. However the next firmware release will allow you to switch Nexus DSC to a 'Bridge' mode and then you can use it as a WiFi to serial or as a WiFi to USB serial adapter.

Best Regards,
Serge.

Thank you Serge. Are you saying this is not possible for the T2Z specifically? Or has the Nexus DSC never had that capability?

Serge, can you clarify for me as well- I can use the Nexus DSC as a WiFi point for a phone/tablet and use SkySafari, right? I assume that is what the WiFi card is for. I was also wondering if I can use the Nexus and also have a phone/tablet running SkySafari at the same time. I think it'd be cool to have some basic info on the Nexus like coordinates, magnitude, etc, and then have a zoomed out finder view on SkySafari. Thanks!!

Tim,

Nexus DSC never had that function before simply because using Nexus DSC as a WiFi to serial adapter would be an overkill - there are other solutions for that (our Nexus and Nexus-II or SkyFi - just to name a few). However for those who already purchased Nexus DSC to use with their non-computerised telescopes (that only have encoders installed) it will be a cost saving not to purchase additional devices and use Nexus DSC as a WiFi to serial adapter. We had a few customers asking if it is possible so we implemented that feature in the new firmware (that will hopefully be released before the weekend). You will however need a cable to connect Nexus DSC to your EM-11 - either a serial cable from us (with a DB9 connector on one and and RJ11 plug on the other end) or you can use a compatible USB to RS232 adapter cable to connect your EM-11 to the USB port on Nexus DSC.

Best Regards,
Serge.

Jay,

Nexus DSC creates a WiFi Access point. A phone/tablet/computer joins Nexus DSC's WiFi network and then SkySafari Plus/Pro can communicate with Nexus DSC. SkySafari shows a telescope cursor indicating where the telescope is pointing. You can also select an object in SkySafari and then press 'GoTo' and Nexus DSC will show on its screen where to move the telescope to point at the object. You can certainly zoom in in SkySafari to show more details/dimmer object around where the telescope is pointing.

The only limitation with having your phone/tablet connected to Nexus DSC's network is that you will not be able to access the Internet unless you use a cellular network.

Best Regards,
Serge.

Why don't you use Tak mount + skyfi + skystafari? It's a good combination with goto capability instead of push-to.

Howard,

As I understand Tim wants to use Nexus DSC instead of SkyFi as he already has Nexus DSC - and he would like to use it the same way as SkyFi. So no Push-To, just let SkySafari control EM-11.

Serge.

Oh then I understand it. I also use Nexus DSC for my FTX and it works very well.

Excellent, that's what I thought. I was hoping I could use SkySafari and the Nexus at the same time so that sounds perfect. Thanks Serge!!
