Losmandy LW tripod Spreader solution - vendor? or DIY help thx
« on: December 29, 2017, 12:06:40 AM »
I'm trying to figure out how to build a really stable spreader solution for the Losmandy LW tripod:
http://store.losmandy.com/lw-tripod

I will be removing the upper, flimsy metal triangle thingy holding the legs at distance, and putting the spreader down closer to the ground. I spoke with Losmandy, they had never heard of any such a spreader nor had any ideas.

This thread comes close:
https://www.cloudyni...ripod-spreader/

I need ideas for parts, particularly how to clamp securely on the rectangle legs. Also, I don't think cable/wire is stable enough, I really want to eliminate vibration for imaging as much as possible. I have an old CG-5 Tripod with a TPI spreader bar and tray I use now, and the thing is rock solid stable. I have a heavy DC battery I want to place on a tray (I'll make a simple wood platform probably).

I could re-purpose the arms and center piece of the TPI spreader, but thinking I'd like to have this tripod on its own.
I contacted Dave at TPI Astro, he's never made one for that tripod.

Thanks for ideas, or any other vendor that maybe has something that will work on this tripod.

Get the extension tube. I'm not even sure my LW legs extend more than a couple inches anymore. I only pull them out a little bit as needed for leveling. That way the flimsy metal triangle thingy (I've never found any Losmany part to be that) is half-way between the tripod head and the ground. Very stable. I suppose there are reasons to extend the legs a bunch, but you generally want to be seated when observing (so you don't shake), or you don't want the legs way out there if photographing (so the camera doesn't shake).

2nd the extension. The LW tripod is rock solid until you start extending the legs over 5" or so.....the extension pier eliminates the problem.

Here's my solution.

It works great and really adds stiffness and stability to the stock tripod, even with the legs fully extended, without any fancy machining or modifications. But I, like NMBob, also have the extension.

I had one of these spreaders on my Mead ETX125 which is now gone. Can you tell me where you got your spreader and what it was originally made for?

BTW, I also have the 12" Losmandytripodextension ,

I don't see any 'extension tube' on the Losmandy site - can you provide a link/explanation?

I'm not following how any extension would help for stability. Really with this thread, I'm asking if anyone has solved a clamp solution on the legs. Being rectangle, it throws wrinkles, all other clamps I'm seeing are round - lighting clamps, etc.
