New Mount for my New Mewlon 250 and Tak FC100DF
« on: December 29, 2017, 05:49:12 AM »
Hello Friends,

I took the plunge and purchased a Mewlon 250. Now I need to purchase a mount.

In my perfect world, this mount would: (1) be light weight and easily transportable; (2) would have accurate goto capabilities; (3) allow me to use both of my scopes (M250 & FC100DF) at the same time in Alt Az mode; and (4) allow me to set up in EQ mode when and if I decide to dabble in AP using my 12 lb refractor.

Although the Atlas EQ Az and the iOptron iEQ45 Pro Az state they could hand the weights of both in Alt Az, I am afraid either mount would have difficulty in Alt Az providing a semi stable environment for visual. Are there any opinions contrary to this? However, reality is starting to kick in, and I am beginning to believe that my wish list is much more of a pipe dream.

Therefore, I am leaning towards the iOptron CEM60. I would be giving up the Alt Az, but not too much else. The mount weighs about 25 lbs. Very doable for me. The weight of the Losmandy G11, although doable, seems a bit more than I would like to carry, setup, and tear down.

Any opinions are welcome and ENCOURAGED! My budget is about $3K to $3.5K all in.

Thank you and clear skies.

Put you money where your mount is, save for a Mach-1.

I know that's not what you want to hear and I know you can't afford it, but do it anyway.

You should have a look at the Losmandy GM811GT. This is the new mount from Losmandy that uses the G11 RA section coupled with the GM8 Dec shaft.

Mount head weight is 27 pounds
Load capacity is listed at 50 pounds
With the heavy-duty tripod and Gemini GOTO system the mount is listed at $3,000
You will need to add some extras but this should still fall within or close to your budget.

Losmandy has been around for decades so there is a large community of users out there for support and ideas.

With your budget and wonderful Mewlon 250 I would take the Losmandy mount over the other imports that you listed.

HEREis a review (by Rod Mollise) of the Losmandy GM811GT that might be helpful. Keep in mind this review is with the lightweight tripod.

Tak NJP. Matches both your OTA's.

There's one on Astromart now. $4400 is a good bit more than your stated budget but still less than even a used Mach1 and with more payload capacity.

I really like my G-11s, but I've grown tired of assembling them and taking them apart. So now one is my travel mount for star parties and theother is in my observatory. For quick looks, I have an Orion Sirius that I keep assembled and ready to carry out of my garage when the mood strikes. I hate to say this, being a Losmandy fan, but unless you can keep the mount assembled, I'd look elsewhere for a mount you plan to use at home frequently. That G-11 will have something likeeight pieces (tripod legs (3), mini pier, head, CW shaft, counterweights (2 for your set-up)) to carry out and assemble, then you still have to put the cables on. It gets old in a hurry and you may find you use your scope less that you'd like.

Of course, if you buy new, you'll get the folding tripod now, so that's three fewer pieces to carry, but that tripod is as heavy as some mounts, I bet.

A cart or wheelie bars is a good way to make a Losmandy mount convenient if you have the space.

"Dabbling" in AP, is like being a little bit pregnant . You will either not do it, or you will need to get serious about it.

IMO, if you can buy a Mewlon 250 on spec, you very likely can afford a Mach1 or MyT (although, understandably, you would much rather *NOT* spend the money).

One of the considerations of buying a premium mount is that they *do* have significant resale value. So if you end up totally hating AP and "downgrade" to a CEM60 or Losmandy, your loss will be comparable to the more likely scenario of having to sell your semi-premium mount and upgrade when you get serious about AP.

Lots of people are happy with the CEM60, but if you go semi-premium after all, I think the GM811G would make you happier. And your location is very close to the Losmandy shop in the unlikely event the mount needs some help.

I would recommend the GM811G but on a wood tripod like the one AP used? to sell. Better dampening than metal, folds up, lighter yet more stable. I have used one with my G11 for over 15 years, sold the metal one. Works like a charm.

Dampening is more of an issue for visual. The Losmandy HD tripod has an excellent reputation, although it's on the heavy side. I love my Avalon T-110, very solid, double clamps on all legs.

However, for those who love wood Berlebach is supposed to be tops, and offered in various models and with a variety of options.

A light weight mount to handle a Mewlon 250 and refractor at the same time? Not a good path. My G11 is excellent for either but not concurrently. Mach 1 is also to light for both at the same time. Neither do Alt/Az.

Thank you all for your input. Today I purchased the CEM60 with Tri Pier from Woodland Hills Telescope. I received excellent service from Daniel and Darren. All the best to all of you.

Those AP wooden tripods were made by Baader. I have one and it is very stable and solid. As Stelios mentioned, Berlebach offers many good options if your route is wood.
