Orion Atlas EQ-G?
« on: December 28, 2017, 07:31:44 PM »
Anybody have experience with the Orion Atlas EQ-G Computerized Go-To mount with SynScan contoller? I have found one for sale, never used at all since purchased in 2007. Are there firmware updates still available? Thoughts on this mount? Any insight appreciated.

I have one, and I love it, At the last Dark sky observing session there were 3 of them set up in our field, the other 2 guys loved their mounts also.

I have one too. It is a heavy mount with good load capacity. I can't say that I love it but for the price (I bought mine new at $1500) I don't think I could have done much better.

What do you think a fair price is for a ten year old, unused, one? And again please, I know this mount is no longer sold by Orion. Are there firmware updates since 2007? Can I download them directly from Orion?

The mount is still sold by Orion...but be forewarned--they will only sell parts, if they are needed, to the original purchaser.

Yes, there are firmware updates, which you can get from either Orion or SkyWatcher (as you probably know, Orion is just a dealer for Synta/Skywatcher).

Uncle Rod - Yes, I'm aware of their customer support policies. I think I'm getting this for a ridiculously good price (also 3 so-so Stratus eyepieces never used, and the Starshoot Imaging Camera. Everything is still in cases and bubble wrap). The customer service policy will be a part of my negotiating.

It will have a Version 3 hand controller. It can be updated to the V3.39.03 firmware.
http://skywatcher.co...nload/software/

It is a reasonably heavy rock solid mount. The hand controller software is not the greatest, but it works OK. If you want to do AstroPhotography, then EQMOD and a EQDirect adapter (USB2EQ6) is the way to go. SkyWatcher will sell you parts and the cost is way less than from Orion. If your getting it for a ridiculously good price, then go for it.

There are a few upgrades for the mount that exist. None of these are necessary, they just make the mount better.
Better Altitude adjustment bolts
EQ6 Wedge
Larger diameter counterweight shaft
Dual Saddle
Rowan belt drive kit
Spreader
I made my own additional spreader to add extra stability for AP.

I bought mine used about 2 years ago for $800 picked up locally. At that time, research showed me that the norm was anywhere from $700 to $1000 used depending on condition.
As stated, they are pretty heavy so keep that in mind. (I have no idea what it would cost to ship one).

Already stated in previous posts but they are still sold by Orion new ($1399 right now) and firmware updates are available from Orion and Sky-Watcher (EQ-6).

It's a very solid and reliable low/mid-level mount. Not a fan of the SynScan controller but it does its job just fine.

I'd call that a great price as long as there are no functional issues

Well, plugged ac adapter into truck, slewed it. It was quiet and smooth. Nothing riding it. Did come with 3 counterweights. Not familiar with Synscan program. Has minor rust spots on legs, one scrape on mounting plate. Still has cap on polar scope. I'll post pics when I get home. The 3 stratus eyepieces are pristine. No CD for imaging camera but that was really an afterthought.

I bought it. I have a lot of ES eyepieces so I think I'll be putting all three Stratus EPs up for sale soon to make back some of my investment...and to ease the reaction of the CFO when she finds out I just bought this. LOL. But now I need to turn to you guys. This is our first GEM. Next thing I will be doing is downloading the owners manual and start reading. I had planned on waiting a while and buying new but when I saw this I jumped. Hopefully it was a good decision. Fair warning - there will probably be a lot of questions heading this way. Soon. Thanks in advance.

Maybe...now realized I am missing the polar axis finder scope and the dual axis hand controller. Searching for used or comparable from skywatcher
