Title: Stellar Masses stainless steel counterweights
Post by: revenade on December 28, 2017, 04:17:21 AM
I Recently bought a new Losmandy G11 mount. I had been looking for some stainless steel counterweights but Robin Cassidy stopped selling them. Then I found a recent post about Stellar Masses stainless steel counterweights here on Cloudy Nights. So I looked at their website, but there was no Phone number and that made me suspicious. But it has a contact section and I sent him a message asking how long will it take for a Losmandy counterweight but I got no reply right away. So I Just ordered one. and a couple of days later he replied to my message only saying "As of now, about 3 weeks." So I ordered a second one. After about 4 or 5 weeks I nicely emailed him asking about my order. No reply. I have also sent several nice polite emails and messages through his contact form on his website. and now through his Cloudy Nights Vendors messages. It has been 7 weeks for the first one and 6 weeks for the second one ordered. I have not received any counterweights, I have not received any refunds(I don't want a refund though, I want my counterweights), There is no way to call him and he has not called me, And he has not replied to any of my emails. It has been over twice as long as he stated it would take and he wont even give me an explanation or even an excuse. Or even tell me that he's working on it and it will be coming soon, nothing.  I am rather poor and I save all my spare money just for telescoping stuff. I have paid out $329.90 to him for 2 counterweights shipped. That is a lot of money for me. I am very worried, I have never seen a business run like this in my life. Will I ever get my counterweights.

Does anyone know anything about this guy, like his Phone number. Is he even in business anymore. I don't think this website is a scam, or at least I pray it's not. I'm sure plenty of people will say they got theirs in the past but has anyone else ordered any recently and did you get yours.

I've ordered three over the last couple years and it can take a while, but he's always come through. It's not a scam...or never was a scam.

No, that is from someone selling some of their counterweights. I had seen a recent post asking about Stellar Masses by Chris Cook and only 2 people replied including NMBob stating they had bought some from Stellar Masses in the past. In Chris's Post dated 16 March 2017 he included a link to the website for Stellar Masses and that is where I bought mine from.http://stellarmasses...m/t/losmandy  (http://stellarmasses.com/t/losmandy)
I can understand if he was late by a week or even 2 but it has been 4 weeks longer than he had stated to me that it would take. To me he should at least reply to one of my emails or messages letting me know something. He answered my initial request stating about 3 weeks.

Darn. That is troubling. I was just thinking about ordering like 35lbs to replace the stock weight for my CGE (uses the same 1.25" shaft). These seem like the best ones available. Maybe not now.

Well I hope there was just some kind of setback. I have now saved up for my third counterweight but how can I possible send him more money when the first two counterweights are so long overdue and he won't reply. I can't even see where he is located. I do agree these counterweights are the best looking I have seen and the best priced.

I ordered a weight last year but went through similar delays and rounds of slowly answered e-mails. I too had Casady weights in past and was looking for comparable quality and build after Casady stopped selling. The weight I finally got from Stellarmasses is very comparable and I am happy with it.

The wait was frustrating but in my case I did eventually receive what I ordered. Seems like a poor way of doing business but no complaints about the product. I suspect he'll come through for you but I agree it is anxiety inducing to be out a lot money and still waiting without word. Sorry I dont have alternate contact info for you.

I don't remember exactly but I checked my old e-mails and all I can tell you is I contacted him for an update nearly a month after getting invoiced for order - can't find his response or record of when received but I'm pretty sure it took 2-3 weeks longer

OK thank you. That sounds like the time I've been waiting except no responses or counterweights yet. But I will be sure and post here when I do get them, or after I try them on my mount to see how great they look first. I put off buying some for my CGE for years and regretted it, but I decided not to do that for this mount. They look so good when I see pics of them on mounts on line.

To play devil's advocate.

In reality, like a lot of other specialty astronomy gear, his appears to be a small cottage industry. I am sure this not his only source of income and he may have a family... I am fairly certain he does not have the efficiency of Amazon, but his counter weight look very nice and are not unreasonably priced.

You never know,
Jaimo!

Unfortunately these events are quite common in our hobby, as many producers are one man operations where the Astro business is just a side job. But in every case, I feel there's no excuse for poor communication, but it's very common. I mean, how much does it cost to send an email?

I'm coming up to 3 years now waiting for my big dob. This hobby sure does teach patience.

By the way ADM Accessories is selling stainless steel counterweights now but he doesn't list the 1.25" bore size used on Losmandy mounts. So I contacted Anthony on his website and he said that he has made brass inserts to reduce the 1.5" bore to 1.25" for other customers and that not including 1.25" counterweights on his website was just an over-site. So there is another place to buy stainless steel counterweights for Losmandy mounts but you need to contact ADM on his website and request them. By the way he lists his location and email address and he answered my email right away.

I intend to get more weights for my mount and I will probably use him next time.

I am in Australia and I have purchased quite a few things from ADM over the years.

Anthony is very Reliable and Trustworthy and when he send things they typically arrive on time. His I terms are pretty well made so quality is not an issue either.

Extremely poor and inconsiderate service from Stellar Masses..........In todays connected world, It only takes a few seconds to email and keep people informed.

Hope your Stellar Masses turn up or you get a refund !

I have no experience with Stellar Masses. On the other hand, Anthony Davoli from ADM is a real stand-up guy, someone whom I would definitely trust to handle an order like this in the future. In fact, I have ordered gear from ADM before, and was quite pleased with the experience.

I hope everything turns out well for you in the end. Did you perhaps pay with credit card or PayPal so you can get a charge-back from Stellar Masses, in case your gear never shows up?

I guess this post got him to finally answer my emails with a message stating his materials were back ordered adding 2 to 3 weeks more to the 3 weeks I was originally quoted. And he expects it to be ready by the end of the week. That will make it 8 weeks of waiting. and this adds 5 weeks to the original quoted time not 2 or 3 weeks.

Hard to believe that the material would be backordered. Metal suppliers are literally never out of stock at the levels he probably ordering.

Spot on. Backordered stainless in small quantites? LOL. At a minimum if it was true for his normal supplier, it's easy to find anywhere online, in stock and ready to ship.
Here is EXACTLY what he uses:http://www.onlinemet...&id=8&top_cat=1 (http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=2045&step=4&showunits=inches&id=8&top_cat=1) took me 30 seconds to find.

On the subject of good and bad businesses in the astronomy industry. I have only been back in astronomy for the past year and a half or so. In that time, while building up my equipment I have dealt with quite a few big and small businesses. One that truly disappointed was Oceanside Photo & Telescope (OPT). They took forever to ship my order, sent the wrong product, never returned phone calls or emails, took over a month and a half to finally process the return and refund me. On the awesome side are Anthony at ADM and Jim at ScopeStuff. Both process orders quickly, communicate well, and always take care of any issues quickly and efficiently. As a matter of fact after I gave up on OTP getting me the correct part, Anthony had the needed part in my hands 3 days later. I should have gone to him first. It goes to show that the little guys can do an awesome job and the big guys can totally stink. That's my two cents anyways.

I suppose it's best not to judge any company based on a single person's experience. OPT has been the best I've dealt with over the past several years and has bent over backward to provide excellent service. The same goes for ADM; excellent service and products.
On the flip side, I've had dealings with a company constantly mentioned on CN as having the best service, returning calls, etc., when my experience was the exact opposite. You can bet it left a sour taste in my mouth and I'll never deal with them again, but once more...I'm only one person.
It's when we read of a company constantly coming up short that one can comfortably say they're one to avoid.

Sorry to hear about all this wait, I don't like businesses like these.. If at least they could answer, it would put one's mind at ease

But glad to see there are still stainless steel counterweights for Losmandy mounts now, I didn't know! I have looked everywhere and ended up with chrome plated steel Geoptik counterweights, they look a lot better than Losmandy's old fashioned dumbbell looking counterweights, but they quickly get dirty, nothing like real stainless steel for sure.. but cheaper too
If I could choose again, I would have ordered those instead

Hope you receive them soon, show us pictures of your mount with them when you get them!

Not bashing, and no disrespect intended, but this is exactly why businesses are able to operate with such crap customer service. No communication, bad communication, delay after delay... and people are still excited to be able to buy their product. Screw that, I'd rather pay more and support quality people in our hobby.

I started this topic in cloudy nights forum and I ended up getting ripped off by Stellar Masses. He kept all my money and never sent the counterweight. When my credit union credit card contacted him about this he lied to them and said he sent it to me.  My address is a UPS mail box in a small town and I know the owner. He watched for it for me and I went there every day but it never arrived.  His website is now closed down and he stole $164.00 from me.
