TS AZ5 for 8" SCT visual
« on: December 27, 2017, 01:48:25 PM »
Good sky everybody!

Somehow hastily a friend of mine has bought a pre-loved 8" Meade OTA with no mount. His budget is very tight, and I am in the situation to help him to find a solution. Do you veterans think a TS AZ5 (or skytee, I understand it is the same mount) will do the job? Based only on numbers, it should work. Any other idea?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Jaime.

If my memory serves me well, the payload capacity of the TS AZ5 mount is about 13 kilos. If the weight of the Meade OTA is below that limit, then, I can't see why it wouldn't work fine. But I guess that you'll need some counterweights.

Your memory is perfect (for mount features, at least). Current Meade 8" ACF is rated at 7 Kilograms. So, in theory it should work smoothly. But I don't have direct experience of the TS mount nor the Skytee version.

The SkyTee is quite a strong mount and will easily handle a C8. The saddles on mine weren't well built (threads stripped in one) and I replacedit with an ADM D saddle.

A more upmarket option would be the Celestron Evolution computerized mount with go-to.

Does anyone know who used to sell this SkyTee?

In my humble opinion, the TS AZ5 is a sturdy mount. It reminds a little of the Explore Scientific Twilight II mount.

Even with the stock Saddles mine still held my 25lbs 6" F9 ED Apo (although a little nerve racking and tad shaky at high magnification).
I added an ADM Saddle to the top and it easily held my 8" SCT.

Wow Mike, that's quite impressive for such a mount.

Thanks to all for the comments

I only used it with the 6" F9 a few times as I usually haul out the CGE for that (tracking).
As other have pointed out, it does work better with an equal counter weight, however I preferred a second telescope to a CW so I did a little Mod to accomodate that.
(see this thread)

As far as I know, the answer is no. TS equipment can only be ordered and shipped to the USA online.

I use the same mount (sold under TEcnosky label in Italy) with my C8 and think that your friend will be happy with this setup.
It is quite rough, but sturdy. Clamps are not great, but can be tinkered easily (beware that screws may be of debatable quality, so do not force them, or replace with better hardware. Should be all metric screws; I have kept mostly the original ones)
Since the mount uses the same interface of Heq5/Sirius he can get the head from Europe, and purchase the tripod in the USA

Really? Isn't TS shipping to the USA anymore? When visit their website, and click on a product, we see "shipping costs to you". The USA option is there. Strange.
