Title: URGENT ::: iOptron CEM25 GoTo messed up!
Post by: Adam Rice on December 24, 2017, 06:05:46 PM
Hello everyone,
I have recently got an iOptron CEM25 bracket.  I played it couple of times and GoTo control went to the items I wanted.
Last night I attempted using the bracket here in Boise, ID, it will a arbitrary places. .
Here's What I'm doing:
- point my bracket RA/polar axis to true north
- level my bracket
- assess authentic north, if needed, make alterations
- set/goto zero place
- slew to target
When I used my bracket in California (home place), it worked fine.  Slewed to sunlight absolutely fine, once centered, it tracked well.  Now that I'm in Idaho for eclipse, it is just stuck on some arbitrary places.  It keep saying that sunlight is -26.7deg that's not correct.  It's just stuck on the exact same position.  I synchronized date/time/location with GPS but didn't help either.  I attempted again after few hours, it still said that sunlight was -26.7 deg.  I eliminated hand controller's battery and put it back in expectation of reseting it but no use.  I'm clueless and want to track the sun for eclipse.  Please advise.
Regards, Deepanshu

Also,
Last night when I tried to perform two star alignment, it went to first star pretty good, second star was way off, like almost opposite.
If I actually tried to correct it by slewing to the correct position of second star the controller froze on me.

Make sure you have good power going to the mount. If you are using a battery it must be fully charged. That is critical for these mounts. Then make sure you have the right location in your handset since you have moved. Although I would think the GPS would get your new location automatically. Is your GPS working ok? Other than that, I don't know what to check. Good luck to you...John

Think about it for a minute...
You changed Long and Lat, did you remember to tell the mount that?
You've also change time zones, check that.

When my AVX gets weird on me, I do a Factory Reset in the hand control. Basically, it takes it back to its default values. Gives you a fresh start.

Lastly, my AVX will go to the N/W when I initiate the Sun Menu. So I bring it back and aim it at the Sun, then it tracks fine after that. I did a 3 hour test run with my camera and it worked great.

My back up plan is I have my DVR's set to grab a few programs on the Eclipse. In case I sleep through it after all the hype.

Relax, take your time, think it through, and don't let it upset you. Have fun!

Deepanshu,

How are you powering the mount? AC adapter or external battery?

I'm using the battery, which is fully charged and capable of supplying 12V at up to 4A before the protection circuit kicks in.
Longitude, Latitude are correct. GPS status says OK and it is also correcting time. I verified, -420 minutes for UTc diff, Northern Hemisphere, DST: Y.
I don't see an option to reset my hand controller in my setup. I tried clearing alignment data but that didn't help either. This is a big mess up, given that I tried it before and drove 15 hours to the location. 😞

Go to the hand controller. Clear alignment data and see if tha5 gets it sorted.

Clearing alignment data didn't help either.

I'm seeing this issue quite frequently here on CN over the past few months.
This thread may help...

https://www.cloudyni...em25-alignment/ (https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/588273-help-needed-with-cem25-alignment/)

Read post #18 carefully.

This is now the 5th time I've seen this "bug" pop-up with iOptron... 3x CEM25, 1x iEQ45, 1x CEM60
It's not the physical mounts. Something fishy going on with the control software.

Kindly post back your results/progress. We are here to help. Also, call iOptron!

Best Luck,
Mr. Joey

Joey,
Thanks for the link, I'm following the correct procedure as stated in post 18. It seems like quite a few people have came across this bug. I'm going to returning this mount as soon as I get back to California. I have a G11 on order, I picked this one up portability but what good portability is when it fails right when I need it.

You don't need goto for the eclipse. Just point the mount toward the sun and tell it to do solar tracking.

This won't fix your problem, but I think you may be misreading the HC. I think -26.7 is the sun's magnitude!

Guys,

Just an update to my problem:

Mount never worked. I slewed it manually during the eclipse and tried to keep the sun in center. I reached out to iOptron, they suspect either the RA controller or HC has gone bad and asked me to send the electronics to them. I am going to return the mount since I don't trust it anymore.

I am glad that I used SEM to automate the shooting, so that I don't panic during the totality and rather enjoy watching it. SEM worked wonderfully. I stopped slewing my mount during totality but the mount decided it need to move back and forth and it messed up my Earthshine photos, I had programmed SEM to take 4 shots, 1 came out okay, other 3 were messed up. Still, I am glad that all other element worked out. About 20 minutes before totality mount decided that it need to point to some random direction, which I was able to force stop.

Here is the Corona shot (blend of 12 shots, 11 for corona and 1 for moon), not the final edit but the starting point -
Shot on Canon 80D with Sigma 150-600 at 500mm. Automated with SEM, updated the script for 1s max exposure at last minute since mount wasn't working.

thanks Larry,

I realized that later, dumb mistake!
