Just a question that came to me. Thanks for any answers!

Lots of folks have told me that I will see a huge improvement if go to 1.25 eyepieces. My 60D 910F Yamamoto AE-61 / Bushnell Sky Chief II has the original .965 eyepieces: HM 6, HM 12.5, K 20 and forumites have advised me that these are anywhere from "crap" to "unusually good". There is agreement that the objective is very good. I've been pointed to a Vixen replacement adapter which screws on the the focusing tube. This is a neat solution but means that switching back between the sizes and forth will be difficult I need to see how big the difference is before taking the full leap.

I would like someone to point me to a 1.25 eyepiece, new or used, for no more than $100 that will knock my socks off and make me decide to consign the .965 eyepieces to a box on the top shelf of the closet. Then after the choice is ratified by plurality of posted opinions I'll buy and try.

I'm too ignorant on the subject to have much of an opinion but I'm reading and have seen some eyepieces that I've considered taking a shot on. One I'm currently looking at is a used William Optics E-SPL 6mm 1.25" for about $75.

Mounts Questions & Expirience / GOTO mount for 8" Meade Starfinder
« on: December 30, 2017, 12:23:27 AM »
Hi everyone.

I have a "vintage" mid-90s Meade 8" Starfinder on German EQ mount that i'm interested in upgrading the mount for. I am just getting my 7 year old son into astronomy and think that a GOTO would be great in terms of maximizing his seeing while his attention span permits.

I have found a lot of recommendations here on the board but they mostly seem to be for folks using refractors. i wondered if these mounts would be the same that would be recommended for a mid-sized reflector.

My concern is that the original Meade mount it's on uses 25# of counterweight and the mounts i'm see recommended typically have 10-15... just want to be sure that they appropriate.

BTW, i would like to keep it under $1000 but could probably push $1500 if necessary, but at some point it just seems like what i should do is buy a new telescope and that's an entirely different quandary.

Eyepieces Questions & Recommendations / Hoping I bought the right one!
« on: December 29, 2017, 11:28:29 PM »
After a lot of research I just took delivery of an ES 82* 14mm eyepiece. I have a relatively fast (4.9) Z10 dob and am hoping that this EP is adequate for both planetary and dso viewing. I had a limited budget, and this ep took me right to the edge. I have the 30mm and 9mm eyepieces that came with my scope, and I also have a 2x Barlow. Of course since getting the ES the clouds have been socked in and I haven't been able to do any observing. Any and all comments are welcome! Still a newbie!

Light Pollution Topics / Streetlight shield-Where to buy?
« on: December 29, 2017, 01:26:13 PM »
The only streetlight where I will be moving is privately owned (despite being on a utility pole). The owner has graciously agreed for me to attach a light shield on one side, but where do I get such a thing? How are they attached?

(sorry the picture isn't rotated properly, but hopefully enough to get the idea).

Thank you for any help.

Mounts Questions & Expirience / Buying advice, dealer or web?
« on: December 28, 2017, 09:46:56 AM »
I need new mount and I'm trying to decide if I should save some money on the web or buy from a very well respected local dealer who can do service. I'm considering the Celestron AVX and I'm getting mixed and outdated reports of quality control issues.

Any advice would be welcomed.

I'm looking for a longer focal length eyepiece(>30mm) to provide a wide view to navigate the stars on my 8" F7. I want the best quality I can get, but I also don't want to spend much because this eyepiece will primarily be used for finding stuff and not for long viewing.

Anyone have a good recommendation before I give Amazon $35 for a Meade 40mm Plossl?

Here's a question I've wondered.  Let's say I have two scopes:

100mm aperture, 1200mm focal length, 40mm eyepiece
100mm aperture, 600mm focal length, 20mm eyepiece

If I looked through them visually, I'd see basically the exact same thing?  They both have roughly 30x magnification.

ATM, Optics and DIY Forum / website seems to be down

The superb site seems to be down.  I have been learning a long time there lately but today it's offline.  Does the owner frequent cloudy nights, or does anyone know who runs it?

I've found a used one at a good price.  It is and older one, but the cost seams reasonable.  Yes , no, maybe?  I could change it over to a visit to.  Any thoughts on this extent could be aprieciated.
