What's the Biggest Dob That Would be Good for Me?

(1/4) > >>

Christopher Buchanan:
Dollies, hand trucks and wheelbarrow handles would be useless for me. I own a two-story condo (paid off!) with no private yard, no basement, no garage. I would probably need to store the Dob upstairs. If I can't bring the Dob down one flight of stairs, around a landing, down another flight of stairs, out the front door, onto a porch, down the porch stairs and out to my Subaru Forester, I can't deal with the Dob.

Keep in mind that I have to take the largest section through a standard front door. No patio doors. No big garage doors.

Also, I want to sit at all positions of the Dob. (I'm 5'7" tall.)

And although I do a 100 pushups every other day, and walk about 4.5 miles every good weather day, I haven't weight trained since the early '80's. I do not want my observing session to be a work out.
Now what would be the largest aperture Dob these factors would limit me to?

I depends on how much land you would like to rent in a dark location.

It also depends on how big your friends' telescopes are.

Just thinking outside the condo.......

I would like to not only think outside the condo but also move out of it.

But that won't happen for at least another five years when I retire. I only live four miles from my work. Any place I want to move to would mean a long commute. Also, since I don't have a house payment, I can maximize my savings.

It's good to think outside the box, but then you should make a decision that makes good sense.

I have free access to dark sites, so renting land would make no sense. I would not feel comfortable storing gear someplace where I don't live. In any case, I would probably never use the big Dob here at home. It would only be for transport to dark sites.

I have friends with bigger Dobs. But that doesn't count. I want my own.

Then the answer would be the biggest one that will fit into your vehicle.

Buy a van and keep the Dob in it, ready to go whenever you are.
